I try to get my foster kittens used to wearing a harness and figure out which type of carrier they’re most comfortable in. Unless an adopter happens to live in my neighborhood (hasn't happened yet!), every foster will need to take a car ride to their new home. I want their first trip with their forever family to be as stress-free as possible.

On the first day I rescued the Minis, Frosty screamed almost the entire ride from the shelter. She’s a talker, as we know—but I still wanted to help her learn to relax in the car. I introduced them to soft, lightweight harnesses when they were very young. The earlier you start, the easier it is for them. Then I got them used to riding in a stroller, which can also be used as a carrier in my car.

We started slow—just short rides around the neighborhood with treats and lots of verbal reassurance. Once they were comfortable with that, I took them on longer trips, eventually leading to our last mini vacation. I wasn’t able to get it on video, but all three of them slept most of the time in their carrier in the back seat. One of them even used a tiny litter box inside the carrier!

It took GB some time and a lot of creativity to get him comfortable riding in the car. We tried different setups, and the strawberry carrier is still his favorite. I tried switching to a bigger one, but he insisted on the tiny, girly carrier he grew up in. He loves his routine; it makes him feel safe.

We’re still working on Mini’s adoption, but things are slowly coming together. Please keep everything crossed that it all works out in the end. 🧡🤞
