James Kalm was working late in the studio, and made the mistake of chatting with friends, and so ran out of time to record much video of this opening. Returning the next day, your correspondent captures un-obstructed views of these works, and ponders the qualities and characteristics that have made the paintings of Philip Taaffe some of the most recognized works produced in the New York milieu in the last thirty years. Mingling various techniques such as collage, frottage, monoprinting and staining, Taaffe presents ambitious finished works that seem to have happened without the intervention of the human hand. While riffing on what appears initially as familiar shapes or formats, these pictures drift into mysterious territories where abstraction confronts decoration, color mends with form, and the new is layered with the archaic.
