CSX Sand Patch Grade 4K - Keystone Subdivision

The epic Sand Patch Grade is a monument to mountain railroad engineering & the human spirit.

Cumberland, Maryland is America's historic gateway to the west.

We start out with the famed steeples
of Cumberland then quickly get into railroad action at the
CSX Cumberland Terminal and begin our journey westward towards Connellsville, Pennsylvania.


The Allegheny Mountains
present a true challenge to locomotives with grades up to nearly 2% for long stretches of the line west of Hyndman, PA. The line finally peaks at the Summit of the Allegheny Mountains at Sand Patch then begins a more gentle slope to Connellsville.
