I BROKE A GRAN TURISMO 4 LICENCE WORLD RECORD (Then Lost it 12 hours later) - IA-15 GT4

I beat a world record on a game that turns 20 years old this December, & held it for roughly 12 hours before it was reclaimed by the racer that had it originally. Fair play to you WestRoadz, thank you for the fun.

This battle took place on the now legendary Gran Turismo 4 variation of the IA-15 licence test, which constitutes a full lap around the Nordschleife, but what makes this more challenging than other full lap licence tests, is that we’re stuck behind a slow pacecar for the whole duration & that enforces hard limits on the test as a whole as the AI is much slower than the player, even when sat in a faster better car. This full lap around the Nordschleife configuration of the Nurburgring would’ve been the first time anybody ever saw a full lap around this track, at least outside of the notorious Transit van Top gear episode.

When you pair this with a relatively feisty & stiff handling Mercedes, plus an obnoxiously slow driver in a Nissan Skyline ahead of you you’re going to have nightmares just trying to keep the test ongoing.

Many years ago, a much younger TGD decided to research the world record times for this licence, as I managed a sub 9 minute time and felt like a complete racing legend. This was short lived at the time however as a quick google search led me to a hotlapper called holl01, of whom was well below the 9 minute mark with an 8:32 & well and truly ended my feeling of accomplishment, replacing it with a sense of determination to try and match or even beat the time. This was many years ago & I failed back then, but the year is now 2024 & I had a quicker time that I was aiming to beat.

Let’s quickly discuss the licence test & what you can expect around here, where you can gain the most time & where it can go all wrong. As you’re not allowed to overtake the pace car, you always need to aim to get on the accelerator as early as possible without passing them, the pace car gets roughly a 15-20% boost in pace the closer you are, so sticking right to him on the straights will net you the best results, but this doesn’t come without any added risks. Bump him too hard, you’ve failed the test. You also have to be cautious of an invisible hook that the car has on the middle rear. Contact at the wrong angle is self explanatory in regard to what I just said, there’s a weird hook like reaction that causes you to get stuck and potentially lose control of the car, this is hard to replicate and can often happen at the worst of times causing a restart.

The gold time for this licence test is just over 9 minutes, we’re aiming to shave off 30 seconds from this test. The gold time is quite lenient on this test, which makes a lot of sense when you consider what we discussed earlier, it back in 2004 it eas my first experience racing around the Nordschleife, I didn’t know it like the palm of my hand the way I do now, so Polyphony and Kazunori were both easing everyone into the green hell experience.
