Background

"Come as You Are" by Nirvana is a song written by Kurt Cobain, featured on their 1991 album Nevermind. It was the second single from the album, becoming the band's second top 40 hit in the U.S. and reaching the top 10 in the UK. The song's recording, done with producer Butch Vig, included a notable mistake where Cobain sang the phrase "And I don't have a gun" too early, which was kept in the final version. The song was performed acoustically on MTV Unplugged in 1993.

Many speculate that the song is about Cobain's struggles with heroin, with lyrics referencing addiction and escapism. The phrase "doused in mud, soaked in bleach" alludes to a Seattle HIV prevention campaign encouraging addicts to sterilize needles. Cobain himself described the song's lyrics as contradictory, reflecting societal expectations and personal turmoil. After Cobain's death, the song inspired a memorial fund for addiction treatment, though it was never realized.
