Subaru Boxer Engine Problems: Reliability And Probable Challenges To Expect. In this video I will talk about Subaru Boxer engine problems.

The Subaru boxer engine is highly reliable due to its;
• Longevity, often exceeding 200,000 miles when properly maintained and cared for.
• Perfect balance.
• Added power boost.
• Safety.

The Subaru boxer engine also optimizes stability, maximizes responsiveness, reduces vibration, and enhances fuel efficiency, saving on costs in the long run. However, it may face some challenges. These include;

Head Gasket Problems
The head gasket in the Subaru Boxer engine has been prone to failure in some Subaru models from 1996 – 2004. If the head gasket fails, your vehicle experiences overheating and, in some cases, disastrous engine failures. The head gasket failure may be caused by;
• Rapid degradation caused by the boxer layout.
• The flat-four configuration, which is more predisposed to leaks.
• Poor-quality gasket material used by Subaru causing premature failure and wear.

Head gasket problems symptoms include;
• Overheating.
• Loss of engine power.
• White exhaust smoke.
• Oil or coolant leaks.
• A milky deposit in the oil.

If you’re experiencing a head gasket failure, you must replace the head gasket. However, you can prevent the problem and prolong the need for replacement through;
• Consistent oil changes.
• Keeping your coolant fresh.
• Regular maintenance and servicing.

Too much Oil Consumption
There have been complaints regarding excessive oil consumption in the Subaru Boxer Engine. These complaints led to a class-action suit by owners of some Subaru models from 2011 to 2015. No recall was offered following the class-action suit. However, Subaru offered to settle the lawsuit by replacing the engines in the affected vehicles with a redesigned boxer engine if they were consuming excess oil.

If your vehicle is guzzling oil excessively, take your car to a professional for inspection and repair. Excessive oil consumption may be caused by several issues, including;
• A failing oil pump.
• Worn piston rings.
• A leaky valve cover gasket.

Repairing or replacing damaged, worn-out, or faulty components can help fix the problem. If this does not resolve the issue, you may need to consider a replacement of the engine, especially if you own one of the affected models. You may also consider an extended warranty solution. To prevent excessive oil consumption;
• Change your oil and filter frequently.
• Service your Subaru regularly.
• Avoid using low-quality oil.
• Keep your oil levels high.
