Older airplanes can be more expensive to own and operate. They are very affordable to buy given their age and logged hours. But those older airframes, engines and radios will need a lot of love. Today we are looking at a 56 years old Piper cherokee 235 owned by private Pilot Karl.

Karl’s piper Cherokee still flies strong. On this day we went for a site seeing flight and the aircraft behaved very nicely. According to Karl, he’s very happy with his purchase, although he admits that the maintenance cost can get a bit crazy. From the first month of ownership, radios and lights have had to be fixed. Later own some mechanical issues sprung up; the airplane wouldn’t start in cold temperatures, another $1000+ expense. First annual, $6,000.

On the very day of this interview, Karl received a bill from is AP mechanic for over $1,700 for recent work done on the aircraft. Point is, an older airplane will get you into the ownership status quite easily. But best be prepared for some unplanned expenses. Karl’s first year and half of maintenance cost on his 1963 piper Cherokee 235 was roughly $13,000. He paid $35,000 for the aircraft.
