My Head is the Only Enemy I Have | AA Speaker Bob Earl

My Head is the Only Enemy I Have by Bob Earl is an old AA speaker tape converted to digital format for me by another AA member. I listened to this tape every day for probably the first 500 days of my recovery (Along with Beyond Reason by Ken D) and very often after that. I needed to hear Bob’s talk because he was able to identify and describe his negative self-talk (which he calls his head) as an observer which was something I was never aware of before I heard this talk.

After becoming aware of my own negative self talk, I was able to talk about it with my closed mouthed friends in recovery and I was able to challenge any of this self talk which either did not serve me, or was objectionable to me.

What peaked my interest when I first started listening to this tape is when he says:

“When a man with 20 years of sobriety gets to a podium and he takes 55 minutes to tell me what it used to be like, and 5 minutes to tell me what’s it’s like now in recovery, I get uncomfortable. You see, that bothers me, you know. I want to hear about the 20 years of recovery.”
