An Update for Dad’s D3 Pickup and some tips and tricks about MIG welding your own Nerd Rods Kit frame. Was Dad’s Down and Dirty, now more appropriately names Dad’s Down and Dangerous.

Things to consider when you want to MIG weld your own frame.

• Is my welding machine big enough? Am I getting penetration?
o You will need to test your own machine to know if you’re getting good welds. Weld some parts in the same configurations, 90°’s, butts and overlaps, then cut them in half and see how much penetration you’re getting.
o If you don’t get penetration you find fit then V Grove the metal a little more so your wire will lay into it and help burn deeper in the parent metal.

• How to I keep all the BB’s from sticking to the surface?
o Anti Splatter, you can get it at the local welding supply and some auto parts houses.

• Should I cut the tip off the wire?
o Absolutely, if not your starting your weld with a flash rusted tip. You’re trying to remove contamination by grinding the scale and rust off the part. Its counterintuitive to put rust in the form of un cut welding wire tip into your already prepped and clean parts.
