An electron dot structure, also known as a Lewis dot structure, is a diagram that shows how atoms in a molecule are bonded together and how valence electrons are arranged around them:

How it works
Uses dots around the symbol of an element to represent its valence electrons. The number of dots equals the number of valence electrons.

What it shows
The bonding between atoms, as well as any lone pairs of electrons. Lone pairs are represented as pairs of dots next to the atom.

How to draw it
You can draw an electron dot structure if you know the molecular formula of the compound.

Who it's named after
American chemist Gilbert N. Lewis introduced the concept in his 1916 article The Atom and the Molecule.

How it's used
Used in both physics and chemistry.
Here are some tips for drawing electron dot structures:

Arrange the dots around the symbol to the right and left, and above and below.
Don't put more than two dots on a side.
When an atom is part of a molecule, all of its electrons contribute to its valence.
A double bond is when four electrons are shared between two atoms, and a triple bond is when six electrons are shared.
