Orchard Road, a premier shopping district in Singapore, is famous for its upscale malls, including those with vast underground spaces. ION Orchard is one of the newer malls, launched in 2009, that transformed Orchard Road's skyline with its futuristic glass, marble, and steel façade. This eight-level mall, spanning four floors above and four floors below ground, houses luxury brands like Dior, Cartier, and Louis Vuitton and offers an art gallery and observatory with views of Singapore’s skyline.
Just a short distance away is Wheelock Place, a distinctive building with a unique cone-shaped glass design, opened in the early 1990s. Known for its architectural appeal, it hosts a mix of retail, dining, and office spaces. The basement connects directly to the Orchard MRT station, allowing easy access for commuters and visitors. It is home to a flagship Borders bookstore and brands like Marks & Spencer.
Wisma Atria, established in 1986, is a longtime favorite. Renovated over the years, it has evolved to offer contemporary and trendy brands like Tory Burch, Coach, and local labels, along with various dining options. Connected to both Orchard MRT and other nearby malls, Wisma Atria has an open-concept layout, contributing to a seamless shopping experience.
Another iconic shopping complex is Ngee Ann City, which opened in 1993. Known for its Japanese department store, Takashimaya, the mall’s seven-story structure includes extensive underground spaces, luxury brands, and a vast food hall. Ngee Ann City also offers cultural and community spaces, frequently hosting art exhibitions and events.
Lastly, Takashimaya Shopping Centre is located within Ngee Ann City and occupies a significant portion of its space. This Japanese department store is famed for its high-end selections, particularly in fashion, jewelry, and gourmet food. Takashimaya has been integral to Orchard Road’s luxury retail scene since the early '90s and continues to attract both locals and tourists. Together, these malls shape the essence of Orchard Road, blending shopping, art, and entertainment across underground and above-ground spaces.
