Vi Ripken, mother of Hall of Fame baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr., escaped unscathed yesterday afternoon after an armed carjacker attempted to steal her car outside of a local bank in Aberdeen, Maryland. The 75-year-old was confronted in the bank parking lot as she walked to her car and told by the gunman that he wanted to steal her car, however, Ripken scared off the man by pushing the panic button on her keychain which set her car alarm off. Ripken then went into the bank to alert authorities.

Within several hours 33-year-old Jesse A. Bowen was arrested while walking down the street close to the scene of the crime based off of an ATM photo. Bowen has been charged with "attempted armed robbery, attempted armed carjacking, possessing a dangerous weapon, first degree assault and several controlled substance related charges."

Bizarrely, this potentially violent incident is the second such one Ripken has had to endure in a little over a year. In July of 2012 Ripken was abducted at gunpoint from her home, tied up and "driven around in her car" until she was finally liberated unharmed 24 hours later. A suspect has yet to be identified in the abduction case and there is no apparent connection between the two incidents.
