'Shankar, the elephant, chained in his enclosure at the National Zoological Park, New Delhi, which he is accused of damaging, this lone African giant has become an unwitting symbol of everything plaguing our zoos. Shankar’s plight caused the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) to suspend the zoo’s membership for six months. Karanjeet Kaur, journalist and former editor of Arré, argues that while the main reponsibility does lie with the zoo authorities, this incident must lead us to introspect on the role of spectators & visitors.
