When I first met Una Bachinski in 1985, I was just shy of 20, living with my parents and going to art school, and she was a 21-year-old student of languages, living in her own apartment. Dressed like a French fashion model, she seemed so sophisticated and grown-up to me, with her beautiful long hair swept up in chignon, and real silver rings dripping off her hands. I was into the punk rock/new wave thing and was sometimes mistaken for a boy. Una introduced me to the idea of wearing women’s clothing, which I resisted for years but embraced in my forties, and I introduced her to the idea of mix-and match colours and patterns, which she excelled at. Over the years we continued to influence and inspire each other.

Una dealt with cancer a couple of times. When she was in her last year, after a bout of grave illness, she had a new lease on life for several months, thanks to chemotherapy, the support of family and friends, and (I believe) her determination to embrace life, light and love fully. As “The Bling Diva”, Una made a series of video blogs about fashion, sharing her finds and feelings. Although she’s not around any more to give me fashion tips (having left this plane 8 years ago today, on Jan 29, 2016), she continues to be UNSTOPPABLE INSPIRATION.
