Looks strange, its rough and knobbly on the outside with a thick layer of fleshy skin.
It's really sticky to handle. I would advise that you wear gloves or make sure to put plenty of oil on your hands.
The fruit itself can range from a hard texture when it has just ripened to a very soft and stringy texture when its over ripe. All edible and very sweet tasting. For me its definitely worth the effort.
Jackfruit is often used as a meat substitute in vegetarian and vegan menus.
The seeds are dried and can be toasted and eaten in curries.

No part of the fruit is wasted, in Bangladesh the skin and centre of the Kataol / Katal jackfruit is fed to the farm animals.
