Let's start the new year by playing all the King's Quest games!

King's Quest IV was released in 1988. This is actually the first King's Quest game I ever played, and I still have very fond memories of it, although it is not my favorite.

In this game you play as Rosella, Graham's daughter, and you are once again whisked away to a new fantasy land. The formula is pretty much the same, the primary area to explore is a grid of screens, and there are several sub areas. Once again there is a real-time element, but this time it is very very lenient; you have 24 real-time hours to finish the game, which is vastly more than you need. An interesting thing about this is that in the 2nd half, day turns to night, which affects which puzzles can be solved. This is not a big deal though, as if you progress the game normally, it will automatically turn to night when it is needed.

This is the first King's Quest to support a sound card, and it highly warrants it because the music in this game is quite memorable. In general, the presentation is quite a bit improved over the first three, with quite nice art and music. In terms of puzzles, there are some difficult ones, although most things makes sense. But there are a few nasty softlock possibilities, including one missable item that is extremely hard to not miss. If you're wondering why you can't find a horse's bridle, it may be time to look at a guide.

Despite that, I really like this game. It's music and atmosphere are a huge step up from the first three games, and I just really like the world that you explore. The game also has multiple endings, as it is possible to miss the key item that you came for in the first place, and get a very sad ending. In my view, this game marks the first of a trilogy of classic adventure games: King's Quest IV, V, and VI. They get even better from here!
