On an x-ray, these folds give the small bowel a characteristic 'stacked coin' appearance, a visual pattern that is important for identification.

In contrast, the large bowel, or colon, is usually located more peripherally in the abdomen. It has a different set of markings called haustra, which do not span the entire width of the bowel and are more widely spaced compared to the valvulae conniventes.
