Road Trip #1045 - New Hampshire Route 101 Mile 108 to 131 - Raymond/Epping/Exeter/Hampton

We drive the last 25 miles of NH-101 to I-95, just short of the Atlantic Coast in Hampton, New Hampshire.

The eastern section of NH 101 was initially intended to be part of a larger project called the New England East–West Highway, which would have connected Albany, New York, to Portsmouth. However, when this project was canceled, NH 101 remained a two-lane highway up until the mid-1990s. This stretch of road gained the nickname "Highway of Death" due to the frequent accidents, and signs between exits 5 and 6 in Raymond displayed the number of fatalities that had occurred there.

In the mid-1990s, the highway was expanded into a divided, controlled-access freeway across the swampy areas of Rockingham County, completing the route between Manchester and I-95.

In Brentwood, near the Rockingham County Jail Farm, an overpass was built in 1991 over North Road, anticipating the future expansion of NH 101. However, since the expressway in this area wasn't completed until 2000, the overpass was humorously called the "bridge to nowhere."

Before April 2024, the section of NH 101 east of I-93 had mile markers starting at Mile 100 and counting upward toward Hampton.

Several portions of NH 101 have been named after notable individuals. In 1949, the section from Keene to the Merrimack River was named the Horace Greeley Highway. In 1981, a stretch between the Auburn-Candia and Raymond-Epping town lines was named the Robert C. Erler Highway, after a former Raymond selectman and state legislator. In 1995, the section from the Epping/Raymond town line to Hampton was named the Jay McDuffee Highway.
