I review the Ford F150 with the 5L Coyote V8 engine with 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque and compare it to the legendary 3.5L EcoBoost V6 Twin Turbo charged engine for Power, fuel economy (mpg), performance and Towing ability. I discuss the Pros and Benefits of each engine and give you my opinion as a heavy duty diesel mechanic which engine performed best on my Towing course.

I got my hands on a new 2024 Ford f150 with the wonderful 5L coyote V8 and wanted to see how this engine could handle my 8,000lbs enclosed trailer with maximum wind resistance. more importantly I want to see how this old school V8 would hold up against the new school twin turbo charged 3.5L ecoboost which is the top engine for towing performance.

on both my acceleration tests the 5L engine was quick but the 3.5L ecoboost beat the 5L v8 both times and this trend continued when on my 120 mile towing. when going up hills the ecoboost engine was able to maintain higher gears and low RPM meaning the engine was not working as hard.

the Naturally asperated V8 on the other hand had to downshift more often and use higher RPM's to gain the torque it needed. overall the 5L was actually very impressive but the ecoboost with its twin turbos was simply a better towing engine.

where the ecoboost strugged is fuel economy. the ecoboost with smaller displacement drank a ton of fuel coming in a 5.8 MPG which is horrible. thankfully as I predicted the 5L V8 was less thirsty but still drank around 7.2 mpg of fuel economy.

Overall I think both engines are great towing engine but the Ecoboost is just a step ahead of the 5L coyote V8 on all levels of towing performance.
