Having the right tool for the job is imperative! Engine swaps are great but most times the alternator included with the engine won't have the needed amperage for the accessories and/or power adder supplements being used or is just simply worn out (fans, more fuel pumps, coolant pumps, fuel injection and even audio).

Low quality or "parts store" alternators are simply designed to fit and cannot withstand the high centrifugal forces that are generated at 8,000+ engine rpm's. Correct pulley sizing and ratio are important in these applications as is being able to avoid "brush float".

Brush float is much like valve float in an engine. The actual brushes in an alternator are forced onto the slip rings with springs. Many parts store alternators have out of round slip rings, and the weak brush springs will literally float off the slip rings at high rpm. We use high end/upgraded brushes and revised/high end slip ring trueing techniques to ensure the brushes remain in constant contact to avoid voltage drop at high RPM's where it matters the most!
