What is a CFW PS3?
CFW is customer firmware, it's a modded version of the OS that allows you to do things SONY's official version doesn't..
You can real-time hack online, or burn copies of ps3 games, or play unofficial games .

Why would you jailbreak a PS3?
Jailbreaking is technically changing the software experience of your PS3 from an Official Firmware to a Custom Firmware.

This is essentially useful because it opens your doors to the possibilities of accelerating your hardware by overclocking it (which can be critical if not done correctly) and also adding different Applications and Softwares on your console to do thing that Sony did not intend your Playstation to do.

BUT that is not why even half of the PS3 owners jailbreak their PS3s. The only reason most of the people jailbreak their Ps3s is so that they can download pirated PS3 games off the internet and play them using MultiMan or some other software.
Bottom-line is that Jailbreaking if done properly and used correctly then can greatly improve your gaming experience and make your Console a lot more fun too.
