In this livestream, we are joined by Ethan Winer of Real Traps. We will be discussing his acoustical products and the results of integrating some of them into the Audioholics primary theater room.

We will also cover the following topics:
Room acoustic problems in general, and how the room harms sound quality more than anything else, even more than loudspeakers.

Solutions to room problems split the frequency range between bass below around 300 Hz, and mids and highs. Bass waves are long and powerful, and so require larger thicker absorbers. Ethan will show his solutions for this and we will discuss how this can supplement a multi-sub system below 80Hz.

Absorbers can solve acoustic problems, though diffusers add an extra dimension by creating the perception of a room being larger than it is.

Diffusers generally go on the rear wall, though photos of super high-end rooms often show diffusers on the front wall, which is a waste. One big feature of RealTraps diffusers is they transition from diffusion above
700 Hz to absorption below. According to Ethan, this is exactly what every room needs on the rear wall.

RealTraps has an impressive list of clients including grammy-winning mastering engineers, corporations such as Dolby Labs, Pixar, Google, and Microsoft, and even the media room at Live Nation. I have several photos of such installations.

We can also talk about Ethan's Audio Expert book, which includes everything he knows about acoustics. But it goes far beyond that, including detailed explanations of how audio and audio devices really work. There's a lot of myth-busting as well, with many accompanying audio and video files.

This book is used as the main course text at major institutions and recording schools including Notre Dame, Tufts, and others.
