In collaboration with Shell and using their biogenic bitumen, Aggregate Industries has developed the UK’s first super reduced carbon asphalt, SuperLow-Carbon - the innovative next step on the carbon reduction journey.

Our Sustainability Director, Kirstin McCarthy, tells us that Aggregate Industries has committed to becoming a Net Zero company by at least 2050.

Shell’s lower carbon footprint binder contains biogenic components trapped within it so that the carbon equivalent cannot be put back into the atmosphere. It’s effectively working as a carbon sink and is known to be a big leap in technology that is giving us a real reduction in carbon.

SuperLow-Carbon isn’t just for the major road network either as this product can be used anywhere from motorways, retail parks, sports pitches and even your own driveway.

From the laboratory work that’s been done so far, there’s an early indication that the fatigue strength of asphalt used in the biogenic binders is better, resulting in roads lasting longer in terms of resistance to cracking.

The construction industry is constantly changing and we need to respond to the requirement of transitioning to a Net Zero economy, which will be a big challenge, but deliver a huge, positive impact.
