Sangeetha Kadur is a wildlife/nature artist, who has done illustrated books and painted walls with murals. She also works with children, teaching them to observe nature through journaling.

She grew up with an interest in wildlife but more focused on art. After graduating from art college, she was influenced by the work of Sunita Dhairyam and decided to combine her interest in wildlife with art. She landed a project with the Gorgas Science Foundation to illustrate a book on hummingbirds for which she painted 30 plates over six years. She talks about working with a team of researchers and other artists for this book.

Sangeetha talks about what went into creating a 3D-wall mural at the MM Hills Nature Interpretation Centre, Karnataka. She has recently started experimenting with software for illustration.

Nature journaling is a way of immersing oneself in nature and making personal discoveries. Sangeetha has used this technique to get children away from gadgets and spend some time observing nature. She says anyone even those without a talent for sketching can gain from the practice.

While nature art is a sophisticated field in the West, in India, it hasn’t hit the big time yet. It has to come a long way in this country compared to a decade ago but artists need more encouragement.
