Water Turbidity Mapping using Sentinel 2 Images in Google Earth Engine | Mahanadi Basin Case Study

In this exciting video, we explore water turbidity mapping using Sentinel-2 satellite images in Google Earth Engine, focusing on the Mahanadi Basin. Our journey begins by defining the region of interest (ROI) within the basin, using specific coordinates to outline the area for analysis. We select and filter Sentinel-2 images, focusing on cloud-free days in 2023 to ensure accurate results. By scaling reflectance values, we prepare the images for further analysis. We then create and visualize both true color and false color composites, enhancing our understanding of the area's water bodies and surrounding land features.

Next, we calculate the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) to highlight water features and assess water presence. A histogram of NDWI values provides a detailed view of water distribution within the ROI. By setting a threshold on the NDWI, we create a water mask to isolate water bodies from the rest of the area. Applying this water mask to our Sentinel-2 collection, we focus exclusively on water bodies, setting the stage for turbidity analysis. We then compute the Normalized Difference Turbidity Index (NDTI) to map and visualize water turbidity levels. This index helps identify areas with varying degrees of turbidity, crucial for water quality assessments.

Finally, we export the NDTI image to Google Drive, making it easy to access and analyze the results further. This comprehensive approach to water turbidity mapping provides valuable insights into the water quality of the Mahanadi Basin, demonstrating the power of remote sensing and Google Earth Engine in environmental monitoring.
