I used to look at my trees and calculate their value as firewood, but not anymore here is why.

This 23 inch diameter 8foot log is the equivalent of about a quarter of a cord, how much is it worth as firewood?

Answer: $75 at $300/cord.

If I sell it to the lumber mill, how much will I get for it? The mill will scale it and say that it is contains 180bf. So if the mill pays me $500/1000bf I will get $90 for the log, but then I need to pay the loggers and truckers out of that so won’t actually get anywhere near $90 out of it. In fact, after expenses, I will get close to the same price for my timber as if I sold it as firewood. This is assuming I actually did the logging myself. If I hired the loggers, I would certainly get much less.

But if I mill the log myself into lumber how much will I get for it? First of all, I am extra careful to get every bit out of the log I can, I end up getting 233bf in 2x6s and 2x4s and a 1x4 and a 1x6. Much more than the 180 board feet the mill would give me credit for, even on their best day!

Answer: $268.10 at an average price of $1.15bf

That is 256% more than selling it for firewood. Plus you will get more fit and have better overall fitness as a result of the exercise you will get milling your own lumber.
