►The Office for National Statistics ‘basket of goods’, used to calculate inflation, has been updated – giving us an insight into our new buying habits. Among other things, men's suits and dictionaries are out - surface wipes and meat-free sausages are in.

As Peter Lane reports, whichever way you look at it, the cost of living is going up - and it's only likely to keep rising.
