Are you a US driver planning to drive while abroad? You’ll likely need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP), which many countries require to both rent a car and drive legally.

Here are four important things to know about IDPs for US drivers:

1. You must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid U.S. driver's license to get an IDP in the U.S.

2. In the US, there are only two places that can legally issue official IDPs: American Automobile Association (AAA) and American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA).

3. Your US driver’s license must have a minimum of 6 months of validity remaining past your travel departure date.

4. Your IDP is only valid for one year.

You can get your International Driving Permit at a AAA office in person, or you can get in online through both AAA and AATA and have it shipped to you.

If you need to get an International Driving Permit from abroad, like if your IDP expires (which just happened to us), then you can apply for an IDP online through AAA or AATA and have it shipped to you.

We got ours through AATA. The cost of the IDP is $20. There was a $7 photo processing fee with AATA. The international shipping fee was $60. It only took 6 days for it to arrive at our doorstep in Vietnam. It may take up to 35 days depending on what country you having it shipped to.

For us, the cost of having our IDP shipped abroad to us was much more expensive through AAA, so be sure to compare for yourself whether AAA or AATA is more affordable for international shipping.
