The D.520 was a French fighter aircraft that entered service in early 1940, shortly after the opening of WWII, and France's best fighter. The first prototype D.520 flew in October 1938. After seizing non-occupied parts of France in November 1942, Germans captured 246 D.520C1 fighters, but only 182 of them were airworthy. Repainted and reequipped, they served in the Luftwaffe for operational training. Some of the German captured planes were sold to German allies, some destroyed during the French Campaign in 1944, and some were recaptured by Free French pilots and French Resistance.
