COMMUTERS who travel through Hornsby will soon have access to what is being heralded the key to a faster, cheaper, more convenient journey.

The Opal card is being extended to 55 additional stations, including stations along the Northern Line, on January 31.

From the end of January, Opal will be extended to train stations from Redfern to Strathfield, Strathfield to Hornsby, Chatswood to Wyong, and Epping to Chatswood.

Hornsby state Liberal MP Matt Kean joined Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian at Hornsby Station on Friday to make the announcement.

"This is great for the community, as customers using public transport will find the Opal convenient and easy, and when Opal is rolled out across the network they won't have to queue up to buy a train ticket ever again," Mr Kean said.

"Once customers have registered and received their free Opal card they simply turn up and tap on at the start of the journey and tap off at the end."

A customer travelling from Hornsby to Town Hall using the Opal card for a single fare will pay $4.70 compared to the current rate of $5.20.

The weekly ticket for the same trip will cost $37.60, compared to $41 and commuters receive free travel on any mode of transport for the week after eight paid journeys.
