Virsi 326: Sinulle kiitos, Isä maan ja taivaan /// Hymn: "Thank You, Father of Earth and Heaven"

A Finnish traditional religious hymn.

Hymn writer Laurentius Paulinus Gothus (1565-1646) was a prominent cleric and cultural influence of Sweden 1600s the first half. After graduating with a master’s degree in Germany, he was a versatile civilized man. At the then still small university in Uppsala, he was a teacher at two sides of the century, first as a professor of logic, then of mathematics, then of astronomy and, for the longest time, of theology. In 1608 Paulinus was appointed bishop of Skara and the following year of Strängnäs. Already at an advanced age, he finally became Archbishop of Uppsala in 1637.

The literary output of the active and determined bishop was extensive. Paulinus ’most important work was the more than 2,500-page Christian ethic, Ethica Christiana. For his diocese, he published in 1633 a hymnbook with his own hymns. Of these, thank you, the Father of earth and heaven is like the title song of this learned bishop.

So what does the hymn say about its author? He sets out by praising the Creator. He thanks for experiencing, redeeming, and protecting grace. He prays for forgiveness, faithfulness to the holy word, a blessing for his work, the courage to proclaim God’s grace and glory. The hymn ends with what it began with: joyful praise, now together with worldwide Christianity. In this way, the hymn draws a picture of its author while providing its singer with a model of how to thank and pray to the Lord.
