Theory of the Item:

In Carnatic music and dance theory, tālam (rhythm cycle) is made up of basic units called angas. The three most important angas are Laghu, Dhrutam, and Anudhrutam. Each anga has a specific hand-gesture and a fixed or variable count.

1️⃣ Laghu (लघु)

• Laghu is a longer rhythmic unit.
• Its count changes depending on the jāti.
• Hand action: One beat + finger counts.
• Counts can be 3, 4, 5, 7, or 9.


2️⃣ Dhrutam (धृतम्)

• Dhrutam is a short rhythmic unit.
• It always has a fixed count of 2 beats.
• Hand action: One beat + one wave.


3️⃣ Anudhrutam (अनुधृतम्)

• Anudhrutam is the shortest unit.
• It has only 1 beat.
• Hand action: A single beat only.
