Shalamar was formed 1976 in New York, New York, by Soul Train booking agent Dick Griffey and founder Don Cornelius. The first Shalamar release, Uptown Festival, was recorded by faceless session singers. Griffey and Cornelius decided to form a group proper when that single was a success, and plucked members Jody Watley (b. 30th January 1959, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.), Jeffrey Daniel (b. 24th August 1957), and Gary Mumford (replaced by Gerald Brown), from the Soul Train set where they were primarily dancers. Gerald Brown was replaced the following year by Howard Hewett (b. 1st October 1955 in Akron, Ohio, U.S.A.) thus completing the group's best known incarnation.

Big Fun

With its third album, Big Fun, Shalamar unveiled its best-known and most successful lineup. Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniels were still on board, but Gerald Brown had been replaced by the charismatic Howard Hewett. Both creatively and commercially, this album would take Shalamar to new heights and establish the trio as one of the best soul-pop units of 1979-1983. The single that made Hewett famous and really sent Shalamar into orbit was "Second Time Around," but the classic Hewett/Watley/Daniels lineup also excels on everything from the insistent "Right in the Socket" to the playfully funky "Take Me to the River" (not the 1974 Al Green classic) and the smooth, Philadelphia soul-type ballad "Let's Find the Time for Love." Definitely one of Shalamar's essential releases, Big Fun was reissued on CD by The Right Stuff in 1996 –

Three For Love

The Howard Hewett/Jody Watley/Jeffrey Daniel edition of Shalamar was in excellent form on Big Fun, Friends, and The Look, but if one had to pinpoint the group's best release ever, the hands-down winner would have to be its fourth album, Three for Love. With Leon Sylvers III producing and members of Shalamar and Lakeside contributing to the writing, all of the pieces fell into place quite nicely. Shalamar enjoyed major hits with the irresistible "Make That Move" and the sentimental ballad "This Is for the Lover in You," and every bit as strong are the funky "Pop Along Kid" and the dreamy "Somewhere There's a Love." Three for Love is soul-pop heaven. –

In 1983, Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel left the group for solo careers and were replaced by Delisa Davis and Micki Free. Howard Hewett left the group in 1986 to embark on his own solo career, as well as production for acts such as his then wife Nia Peeples, and was replaced by Sidney Justin. The band broke up in 1991, though Sidney Justin continued to tour with a new incarnation of Shalamar.

In 1996, Watley rejoined with Hewett and Daniel, plus LL Cool J, on Babyface's million-selling single "This Is for the Lover in You"; a cover of a hit single from Shalamar's Platinum album Three for Love (1980). A music video was shot in which the three former members of Shalamar were digitally reunited on screen. Hewett, Watley, and Daniel subsequently joined Babyface and LL Cool J to perform the song on the UK's Top of the Pops in 1996.

In 1999, Howard Hewett and Jeffrey Daniel reformed Shalamar and played in Japan. This was followed by UK tours in 2000, 2001, and 2003. From 2003, Shalamar continued touring with the line up of Howard Hewett, Jeffrey Daniel, and Carolyn Griffey. Carolyn's mother is Carrie Lucas, for whom Watley sang backing vocals.
Shalamar was featured in an episode of TV One's series Unsung, in which Watley, Daniel, and Hewett shared their stories about the group's creation, the lack of payments and royalties from SOLAR, success, egos, and the breakup of the classic lineup. Dick Griffey, Micki Free, Delisa Davis, and Sydney Justin were also interviewed for the episode. In October 2009, the reconstituted Shalamar of Hewett, Daniel, and Griffey, performed as a part of "The Ultimate Boogie Nights Disco Concert Series", at IndigO2, within O2 Arena Entertainment Avenue in London.

In 2015, Watley acquired the trademark to the Shalamar name and began touring with new members Nate Allen Smith and Rosero McCoy. The Hewett and Daniel led reformation also continued to use the name, causing conflict between the two versions of the group.

As of July 2018 the European Intellectual Property Office certified ownership of the Shalamar Trade mark back to the ownership of the Griffey family. Carrie Lucas and Carolyn Griffey, wife and daughter of Shalamar creator Dick Griffey, officially own all licensing across the 28 countries of Europe.
