The by-elections held for several vacant positions at the local level are nearly complete. Voter participation in these elections has generally been encouraging. This year, elections are being held in over 50 countries around the world, resulting in the selection of new governments and leadership in those nations. In democratically practicing nations, voter participation in such elections is often regarded as a cornerstone of democracy.

However, is democracy merely about periodic elections? This has become a pressing question in recent years. Democracy is not just about conducting elections; it also encompasses the behavior of political leadership, government policies, accountability, and, importantly, the adoption of democratic values and principles by citizens and society. Without these elements, the true essence of democracy cannot be realized.

In today’s episode of Fireside, we delve into these multifaceted aspects of democracy.
Our special guest is Yogendra Yadav, a renowned political thinker and activist from India, a country that proclaims itself the largest democracy in the world. Yadav has been consistently working to bring political campaigns to the grassroots level. He is one of the founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party, which once emerged as a significant alternative political force in India. During his recent visit to Kathmandu, we had an insightful conversation with him, which we are presenting in today’s episode.
