🌎 A Slice of History
The Name: 'Huapai' is a Māori word meaning "good fruit" or "abundant fruit," which perfectly foreshadowed its destiny.
Orcharding Roots: From the early 1900s until the late 20th century, Huapai was the "Fruit Bowl of Auckland." Huge areas were covered in orchards growing apples, peaches, pears, and strawberries.
The Strawberry Fame: For decades, Huapai was synonymous with strawberries. Families would make weekend trips to Huapai to buy strawberries directly from the farms or from roadside stalls.
Transition to Wine: As land prices rose and the industry changed, many orchards were replaced by vineyards. The same soil and climate that was perfect for fruit is also ideal for growing wine grapes, leading to the world-class wine region we see today.
