📖 Today, I am reviewing two books linked by Brother Anthony of Taizé. I explain what each book is, how it reads, and who it is for so you can choose a good starting point with confidence. This is an overview for readers, clubs, and classrooms.
Eerie Tales from Old Korea is a compact collection of late-nineteenth-century yadam-style ghost stories, first translated into English by Homer B. Hulbert and James S. Gale, and curated here for modern readers. You will meet beggars, monks, magicians, and wizards who outwit the supernatural with nerve and wit.
Ko Un: First Person Sorrowful gathers about one hundred recent poems by Ko Un in translations by Brother Anthony and Lee Sang-Wha, offering a clear entry point to a living voice that ranges from quick observations to public-minded critique.
Why this video helps
You will see how the two books fit together as a double introduction: haunted storytelling from the past and a concise sampler of contemporary poetry. I also share who will enjoy each book most and how to use them for a class or a club.
