During the 9th lap of the 1969 Permatex 300 at Daytona International Speedway, Don MacTavish, 28, lost control of his car and slammed the outside wall with so much force, it ripped off almost the entire front of the car. The car then spun around several times on the track surface, with MacTavish completely exposed in the car. Then, he was hit my Sam Sommers head on, sending Don's car in the infield. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
