The Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge is a 4.8 kilometre long bridge connecting the Western part of Bangladesh with the Eastern part. Before the construction of the bridge, these two parts of Bangladesh was physically divided by the Brahmaputra river(locally known as Jamuna).

The Jamuna River is "braided" in nature having non-permanent channels with islands locally known as "char" in between them. During high flood seasons, the river have a width varying from 12-16 kilometres. The unstable nature of the river requirement of river training in a huge scale. About half of the total construction cost was only required for river training purpose only.
