Is upgrading the Fazer to R6 forks worth it?

Описание к видео Is upgrading the Fazer to R6 forks worth it?

Over the years of ownwership with my FZ6 Fazer I've grown more aware of the softness and lack of feel through the front tyres and when researching if this is a common complaint I came across several forum posts about ugrading the springs, changing the oil weight, and the most expensive but transformative option of swapping to R6 forks.

I replaced the fork oil in the original forks 1 year prior to this video with 10W40 oil (Yamaha recommends 5W as standard) so the condition of each should be comparable.

Here are some of the forum posts that helped to understand about this upgrade:

Here is the price breakdown (in 2024):

- 2004 R6 Forks - £110
- 2004 R6 Callipers - £80
- New Brake Pads - £35
- Braided Lines - £66
- R6 Axle - £25
- 3D Printed Mounts - £12
- Axle Extension - £6
- Wheel Spacers - FREE (I drilled out some extra large washers)
- Brake Calliper Shims - £10
- Fork Rebuild Kit - £50

Total: ~£400
The FZ6 forks and callipers are selling for ~£100 and ~£80 respectively which certainly helps justify this upgrade.

As I get more comfortable and confident on the bike over the few years that I've owned it I increasingly found the feel front the front lacking, the dive excessive, and the cornering characteristics heavily dependant on how loaded up the bike is. Changing brake pressure or throttle load during a corner changed the geometery of the steering so much it was difficult to confidently hold a specific line. I had no complaints about the comfort, they are just a bit too soft for me.
Changing to R6 forks does sacrifice some of that comfort but it completely removes the cornering issues I had, and the improved feel is absolutely worth it.

I would like to try the alternative upgrade using the stock forks and just replacing the internal spring to a progessive type and increasing the weight of the oil. I think this would be the best value in terms of money and time for most people. I have these forks set very soft so it's likely overkill that I have all of this adjustment and added stiffness but I don't use it. But that's what I like.
