MakeNoise has recently introduced the Resynthesizer case layout, focusing on the Morphagene into Spectraphon combo and featuring the modern stereo modules. It's not available in stores, but it receives all the attention you'd expect if it were. There's a dedicated manual with patch examples and the MakeNoise socials are eager to tell you how it works.

When I first saw it in action, I had my doubts. I don't use the spectral processor mode very often and I'd prefer a layout moe similar to the Shared System which I've been patching for a very long time. It's like favorite jeans, a new model would feel weird and maybe even uncomfortable. I stalled while rearranging the case, and at first I wanted to just be stubborn and organize it my way.

But I gained a few new insights while playing it. First, it makes perfect sense when your goal is to resynthesize existing sounds. Second, a new layout breaks your muscle memory and you'll need to find new solutions for new patching challenges. It feels terrible at first, but it also made me patch in a different way. At some point I wondered what would happen if I completely reversed the chain from effect to VCO to utilities. It doesn't make sense and it will probably lead to nowhere. But honestly, I don't know what will happen. Last, I realized that the people at MakeNoise can make serious music. I never realized Walker could play so well, and the staff can make really cool patches.

So what's next? I decided to stick to my Shared System X series and cover new combinations as they come along. The Resynthesizer layout is definitely a keeper, but I am pretty sure I'll mimic the Shared a bit more since the Spectraphon is also an excellent VCO. I also need to replace the SP with my dual XPO setup and the Resynthesizer doesn't have room for them with the Morph in the top row. So I can still do any official Resynthesizer patch, but I'll need to patch it a bit differently.

The end of the video shows there's no definitive layout for the Shared System 'X'. There's always something new lurking in the shadows.
