What is a preposition? A preposition is a word that expresses a relationship of time, space, or cause between the subject of a phrase and the noun or noun phrase that follows the preposition.

The cat is in the box.
There will be rain throughout the afternoon.

Why do we call them prepositions? Because they come before the nouns to which they refer—they are “pre”-positions. In some languages the same function is filled by a postposition or a noun suffix, but in English prepositions are almost always used. An exception is “ago,” which comes after its noun complement.
