I’m Allison White and I’m the owner of Scout Cart. Scout Cart is an all-purpose utility tool designed for transporting things on foot. I got the idea for Scout Cart in 2011. I was dealing with a back injury and went to the grocery store to get a turkey and I couldn’t pick it up and put it in the cart. I started to think about how I could make grocery shopping easier. It made me think about how we could make a grocery cart that you could take home with you. We spent one weekend buying PVC pipe and buying wheels. The original drawing is pretty much where we went with the cart. It was pretty brilliant. I took the prototype to the International House and Homeware Show. While I was there, we got a tremendous amount of interest from all types of buyers. At that point we decided to look for a manufacturer. The idea that we needed a barcode came from our manufacturer in China. It wasn’t as intimidating that I feared that it would be. If it hasn’t been for e-commerce, we would have said “how are we going to sell these?” We started off selling on our own website, we started to get preorders. I think we had 109 preorders before our first batch of carts came in. We started looking for other places to sell our carts. Recently, we went to a large chain of hardware stores to sell our carts and one of the first things they asked was “do you have a barcodes?” and I was able to say “yes, of course we have barcodes”. We have been surprised by all the different uses: hotels, schools, prisons, fast food. It just has anything you need to move around but don’t want to carry. As a small business owner, it’s a great feeling to have created something and to not give up. This project has become a member of the family and it means a lot to all of us.
