Old German Pistol Grip Hand Crank Drill Restoration - Restoration Videos

Hi friends. I prepared a restoration video of a German Steppke brand hand drill. At first glance, this product reminds of a pistol. Handle feels like a handle of a pistol. Seemingly, it didn’t show a lacking piece. The paint was chipping away and the metal parts were rusted-jammed due to wear over time and neglect. When I first disassembled the drill, due to the pin that holds down the gear connected to the main arm being drilled in a wrong way I couldn’t disassamble it securely thus I took it out by breaking it. After it is done, the way I do it will make it so that the next person who disassambles it is going to have easier time because I used a longer pin. There was a bearing which was holding down the shaft carrying the chuck, I believed it was swapped at some point. Some steel balls of this bearing were missing and it was standing in a primitive way. With the new measurements I had I changed the bearing to a new one since the old one didn’t quite fit well. This renovation will allow the drill to be used without any problems throughout the years. Since the chuck was the most open piece to the outer enviroment it also was the most jammed and rusted piece. The springs inside were very worn-out. By making new springs for it I achieved a better functioning chuck. After that, according to my usual work schedule I did various applications of leveling, sanding, buffing and nickel-coating. And I also made a new metal washer out of brass. This new washer will minimize the abrasion. I changed the bolt heads as well. The older ones were flat and the holes near the edges, the bolt heads were sticking out. By using a tool of my design I shaped the flat headed bolts into cambered head ones. This might have been the part I liked the most. I heated up and leveled the main arm too. That will create a better turning motion for the user. I did cut off the shaft of the wooden handle part. I re-made the shaft from an existing pin I had. I cold hammered the shaft into the place like it would be done the original way. I sticked to the original color and painted it hammered green. If you would like to ask the brand of the paint, it is Dewilux synthetic paint. I was thinking this to be a shorter video (15-20 mins) but it turned out to be a dynamic 30 minutes long video. I hope you like it. Please don’t forget to leave a like if you liked watching it and leave a comment. I try to read every single comment.
