Stress and Trauma in Schizophrenia

This lecture examines the association between earlier-life trauma and later-life psychosis.

Animal studies have shown that early-life stress can affect brain development in ways that have long-term effects on stress response and neurological functioning.

Though the mechanisms or pathways are less clear, its clear that stressful events or traumas can increase the risk for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Additionally, among people with schizophrenia, a history of traumatic or stressful events are often reported.

It’s not yet clear the extent to which treatment for schizophrenia with trauma association should differ from treatment of schizophrenia without trauma history. However, clinicians working with schizophrenia-affected individuals should be mindful of trauma.

This lecture is part of Northeast Ohio University's education(+)consultation service, SZconsult. A powerpoint file for this lecture is available at http://szconsult.org/
