Chemo Port को कैसे Manage करें? | Chemo Port Care Explained by a Cancer Surgeon! | Dr Praveen Kammar
What Happens After Chemo Port Insertion
Once your chemo port is inserted, and you’ve completed the initial healing phase, most stitches are removed by Day 10. At this stage, many patients feel confused about what’s next. Since the chemo port sits entirely under the skin, there are no visible parts hanging out. This means daily care from your side is minimal, but there are still a few important practices to follow.
Clothing Guidelines
Wearing tight clothing over the port area can cause discomfort. While there's no strict medical rule, you should wear what feels comfortable. Avoid outfits that apply unnecessary pressure to the chest or collarbone area where the port is placed. Soft, loose clothing usually works best in day-to-day situations.
Avoiding External Pressure and Friction
Be careful about things that could rub against or press on the port. Shoulder bags are a common example. If the strap rests directly on the chemo port, it can cause discomfort and even injure the skin. The same goes for seat belts. Make sure they don’t press directly over the port area.
Contact sports like kabaddi, wrestling, judo, or karate should be strictly avoided. These activities increase the risk of direct impact on the port site, which can lead to injury.
When to Resume Physical Activity
Heavy workouts or labor-intensive activities should be paused for at least 1 to 2 months after insertion. This gives the tissue around the port time to fully heal and regain strength. During this period, avoid lifting heavy weights, swimming, or gym training. Once cleared by your doctor, you can slowly return to these activities in a phased manner.
Sleeping Position Tips
There’s no one fixed sleeping position, but sleeping on your back is usually most comfortable. If you prefer sleeping on your side, lie on the opposite side of the port. Avoid sleeping on your stomach as it can press the port against the bed, which might damage the skin or cause discomfort.
If you absolutely must sleep on your stomach, place a soft pillow under the port side to reduce direct pressure. Also, review your mattress and pillow setup to ensure you're not putting extra strain on your chest.
Extra Care for Lean Individuals
If you are very thin, the skin over your port might be delicate and more prone to damage. In such cases, even minor pressure—from a bag strap, seatbelt, or mattress—can cause injury. That’s why consistent care is crucial in preventing avoidable complications.
