Mass finishing, also called high-energy finishing, automatically sands and polishes parts built on a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) system, resulting in a surface finish that resembles injection-molded parts. Because mass finishing eliminates much of the time and labor involved in finishing FDM parts, direct digital manufacturing is feasible in higher volumes than with hand finishing.

Batch-tub vibratory finishing machines and centrifugal barrel finishing machines both work with a variety of media material to achieve a smooth surface, depending on part size and FDM material. Parts produced on a Fortus 3D Production System in ULTEM 9085, polycarbonate or ABS thermoplastic can be polished automatically.
