Sullivan Cave is a well-known Indiana cave in Bedford that is famous for the Backbreaker Passage that makes up the main highway to the rest of the cave, so-to-speak. With 50,846 feet of surveyed passage, this 9.63 mile long cave is developed within the Saint Genevieve Limestone along the Crawford Upland. The main entrance is an easy climb down into a small pit, with access via a locked gate. Traveling to the Backbreaker is a maze of ups and downs before ascending to the main passage. Consisting of three levels, Sullivan Cave is home to the Sullivan River in the lower passage. Our trip route was a little different this time, in which at The T, we continued on past the Mountain Room and headed towards the Popcorn Crawl, a long, low crawlway consisting of cave popcorn, speleothems, and helictites. Access to the Popcorn Crawl required descending the Grand Canyon, a 13-15’ slot on the floor. Once through the Popcorn Crawl, we clambered into and down the Sorry Room, where the breakdown pile leads to the lower River Passage. Following the Sullivan River to the South Y, we approached the Spiral Room, a large circular collapse with progressive breakdown which led to the side walls having an upward spiraling ledge. Due to its size and passage layouts, Sullivan Cave is a particular complex cave system that generates interest for both Scientists and Sport Cavers alike.
