Did you know that some seeds need to experience winter before they’ll sprout? That’s where cold stratification comes in! In this video, I walk you through how I prepare my seeds for germination by mimicking nature’s cycle—starting with a nutrient-rich, microbe-packed seedling mix.

First, I harvested fresh worm castings from my wild-caught earthworms. These castings are full of beneficial microbes that help break down nutrients and support healthy plant growth. Instead of starting seeds in a sterile mix, I introduce them to microbes from day one by blending worm castings with coco coir and vermiculite. This kickstarts the natural process that seedlings would experience in rich, living soil.

Once the mix is ready, I mix the seeds into the seedling mix and place them in the refrigerator for four weeks. This cold stratification process signals to the seeds that winter has passed, triggering them to sprout when they hit warmer temperatures. This step is essential for native wildflowers and other hardy plants that need a seasonal reset before they’ll bloom.

By combining microbial gardening with cold stratification, I’m setting my plants up for success before they even break the soil. Let’s grow! 🌱❄️🐛
