"Brotherhood of Man" is a 10-minute subversive animated "educational film" commissioned by the United Auto Workers union 'UAW' & produced by United Productions of America animation studio 'UPA' in 1946.

Shortly after WWII, the UAW was still suffering a hangover from the unauthorized June 1943 Detroit Race Strike that occurred when 25,000 White workers building military aircraft engines for the war effort, walked off the job at the Packard Motor Company plant to protest the company's attempt to comply with FDR's 1941 Executive Order 8802, prohibiting ethnic or racial discrimination in the defense industry by integrating black workers into the Packard production line.

The wildcat strike was put down, but racial tensions simmered nation-wide among factory workers during and especially after the war as demand grew for consumer goods like automobiles again.

In response, the UAW produced "Brotherhood of Man" to indoctrinate it's members with the ideology of 'racial-tolerance'. As such, the film uses small green demons to depict the scourge of racial prejudice, while making the long-debunked pseudo-scientific claim that race is socially constructed. Also, that the only real difference among the races is skin color and underneath we're "all the same". As for any behavioral differences between the races, those are hand-waved away as due solely to cultural rather than biological causes.

The film is closely based on a 1943 pamphlet "The Races of Mankind” written by two women who were acolytes of anthropologist Franz Boaz; Gene Weltfish & Ruth Benedict and published by the shadowy New York Public Affairs Committee. The tract which also contained subtle pro-communist messaging became infamous in the 1950's when it was revealed that more than 55,000 copies had been distributed to the US Army!

Thankfully, when Congress learned about the pro-Soviet messages in the flyer, it was pulled. But the public outcry over American servicemen being subjected to Communist Propaganda triggered a government investigation that eventually led back to the people at UPA who’d worked on the cartoon that the dubious tract had inspired. Long story short - due to the fallout, UPA soon lost most of their government contracts doing training films for the military, etc., which at the time was their core source of revenue & the company struggled for years to keep its head above water.
