Both countries established regular diplomatic missions on 18 April 1952, just ten days after the ratification of the Japanese peace treaty. however Pakistan already established diplomatic and trade contacts with Japan since 1948 – long before Japanese sovereignty was restored by the Allied Powers.

In order to meet the acute shortage of food in Japan caused after the war, Pakistan shipped 60,000 tons of rice through Nichimen vessels to Japan in 1952 and 1953 carrying the signboard ‘Donated Rice to the Emperor of Japan by the Government of Pakistan’. Such was the national sentiment between the two sides in the 1950s.

Pakistan played a significant role during 1947-51 in lifting the Occupation and restoring of Japan's sovereignty. Pakistan was known as the 'tower of strength' on the Japanese peace treaty signed on 8 September 1951 at San Francisco as was marked by US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. Unlike many Asian countries, Pakistan waived off war reparations to Japan to help build its economy. Pakistan was among the first few countries that had ratified the Japanese peace treaty.
Pakistan appointed Mian Ziauddin as its first Ambassador to Japan on 18 April 1952[1] and Japanese Ambassador Kiyoshi Yamagata arrived in Karachi on 4 September 1952. Pakistan and Japan exchanged the high level visits in April and May 1957. Pakistan's Prime Minister Hussain Shaheed Suharawardy was the first Asian leader to visit Japan in April 1957, which opened up the door to Japan to come back to Asia after World War II. Within a month in May 1957, Japanese Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi undertook visit to Pakistan, which was also the first-ever visit by a Japanese Prime Minister to Asia after the end of World War II
Following Ayub’s visit to Japan, Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda visited Pakistan on 17–20 November 1961 as a part of his Asian tour. He offered a yen loan of 20 million – Japan’s first ever to Pakistan (besides India).

Promoting mutual diplomacy between Pakistan and Japan, Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko undertook a visit of Pakistan on 23–29 January 1962 to create the feeling of harmony in Asia, while reparations and normalization were still irritants in improving Japanese relations in Asia. In his welcome address the Emperor admired the Pakistan-Japan ties as under:

“Bonded not only by age of old relationship of culture and civilization but also by the modern ties of trade and cooperation, both Japan and Pakistan have first developed a unique identify of thought and we are emphatic in our belief that in between themselves both the governments and the people of these two countries are by virtue of their deep-rooted love for peace capable of exercising an irresistible influence on world opinion”

EVERY RELATIONSHIP HAS ITS DOWNSIDES UT IN THE CASE OF JAPAN THE DOWNSIDES ARE HUGE AND PAKISTAN IS LOOSING TRUST IN JAPAN DUE TO THE JAPANESE POLICY OF AMERICAN APPEASEMENT AND The Japanese so-called idea of the ‘arc of security and freedom’ floated in 2006 in cooperation with India and Australia, a leap forward to India in the shape of civil nuclear cooperation BECAUSE OF such JAPANESE NON SERIOUSNESS IN RESOLVING ITS DISPUTES WITH CHINA JUST NOT DOING SO ON AMERICAN PRESSURE IS WHAT THE PAKISTANI DIPLOMATS FEEL ABOUT JAPAN ..IN THE new growing pakistani economy which will be in world top 19 economies by 2025 , japan is loosing its fair share in growth and profits due to its problems with other asian countries and its increasing relationships with india which are again because of common hostilities towards china and other asian countries , japan india relationship have limited japans access into major asian markets and oil routes now a days and the american policy of containment of china was also blatently refused by pakistan to the point where major counter actions were taken by pakistan ,when pakistan has recently allowed a shorter , cheaper and much more safer supply route to china compared to the south china sea ,this will be a major boost to chinese and pakistani economies and military strength .a great draw back to american driven naval aggression in the south china sea as pakistan has built in cooperation with china a deep sea port right on the neck of the persian guld and now chinese navy has full access to the arabian seas aswell ,so due to these divergens in japanese and pakistan foreign policies this relationship is currently on the down side ,since pakistan and china consider each other absolutely vital for each others existence , Japanese investments in Pakistan remain very limited and therefore, its economic relations are weakening with Pakistan. China and ASEAN are gaining trade shares in Pakistan. Japan needs to change its stance on taiwan and south china sea ,old fashioned policy of appeasement of the united states while jeopardizing opportunities for the people of japan
